What we do

To carry out its functions the SPA:

Ø  Runs a variety of Open Competitions

Ø  Runs Postal Leagues

Ø  Manages and is responsible for training courses for Coaches and Range Officers

Ø  Manages and trains the Scottish National Pistol Squads

Ø  Selects Scottish teams for National and International matches

Ø  Provides advice on subjects related to Pistol Shooting (Range design/approvals, new regulations etc.)

Ø  Lobbies Scottish MP's on Firearms related subjects

Ø  Is involved with the Scottish Target Shooting Federation in the development of proposed Scottish Regional Shooting Centres of Excellence

Ø  Publishes the SPA Newsletter (at random intervals)

The SPA is always looking for ways to respond to the needs of the Shooting Community in Scotland.  However, to do this we need the support of all the Pistol Shooters of Scotland (even if you only shoot a few shots each month or year) either as individuals or as members of affiliated clubs or associations.

REMEMBER! If you don't let us know you are there and what you want, we cannot develop to meet your particular interests or needs.

COURSES - Are available to qualify members of affiliated clubs as Range Officials and as Coaches.

Range Officer - every club needs Range Officers! The SPA courses qualify individuals as:

1) Club Range Officer (to operate on private ranges) and

2) Range Conducting Officer (necessary to operate on MoD/TAVRA ranges)

3) Coach - Courses are based on the GBTSF Coaching Scheme and are on a modular system at various levels:

Ø  Primary Coach - Every club should have at least one Primary coach. This is the first step on the qualification ladder. The course consists of three weekends, residential at the NSTC, Largs, followed by a one day assessment

Ø  Senior Coach - Available to qualified Primary Coaches after completion of at least 12 months active coaching (monitored) and additional modules and assessment

Details of course fees, locations and dates are available on request.

STSF - This is the Scottish Target Shooting Federation and is the overall body controlling competitive shooting in Scotland. It is made up of the four Governing Bodies for shooting which are:

SCTA - Scottish Clay Target Association

SPA - Scottish Pistol Association

SRA - Scottish Rifle Association (Full-bore Rifle)

SSRA - Scottish Small-Bore Rifle Association

STSF is the central link between the individual associations and deals with such bodies as the Scottish Sports Council, Scottish Home and Health Department, Local Authorities, other Government Agencies and UK National Shooting Bodies (GBTSF, NRA, NSRA etc.) on matters which affect all of the shooting bodies in Scotland.
